Tango at OSU: A New Season Begins

Lessons at OSU will be starting up again this week on Monday, 1 April. Tell your friends!

We will be at room 205 of the Women's Building on campus, with class running from 7 - 8:15 and an open practica thereafter, until 9pm.

Starting this term, Dedra and I willl be restructuring the format of classes so that each lesson is self- contained, exploring within the limits of certain steps or principles of Tango - rather than being presented as a series where understanding the instruction of each consecutive class more or less requires having attended the previous sessions in that particular series.

Since many club members from both the university and the community aren't able to attend classes consistently, this way everyone can benefit from each lesson in and of itself and can feel confident about coming to lessons whenever they are able to, instead of waiting for the start of the next 'class series' to slot in again and try to catch up.

This also helps cater better for drop-in students and visitors who participate just to get a quick taste for the flavor of dancing the Argentine Tango.

As always, we will mainly be teaching beginner-level Tango movements and techniques as a foundation - with one or two intermediate or advanced aspects / alternatives introduced on the same topic as an option to try out - to challenge newcomers and cater for slightly more experience Tango dancers.

Though much of the content we'll cover should be in some or other way be familiar to a number of you by now, we'll be adding dimensions to these to improve the depth and texture of how you're able to perform the steps - utlimately making for a more pleasant and controlled Tango dancing experience - while keeping them achievable for those who are coming for the first time or who don't know a particular basic movement yet.

ADVANCED DANCERS - Please respect that the majority of OSU club students are in their beginner phase of learning Tango, and therefore our goal is to help them develop firm fundamentals, and not force or frustrate them with flashy or complicated movements that bear no relation to what is being shown and taught, that can distort their learning. Since the classes are clearly of an introductory nature and format, we expect that experienced dancers who attend those demonstrate their maturity and come with an attitude of wanting to help nurture beginners into developing properly.

As for the practicas, you are welcome to dance as you please - as always, moderating steps in accordance with the skill and comfort-level of one's partner. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

See you at OSU!
